Internet usage statistics were gathered over the course of a few days in October 2004 by
repeatedly pinging all hosts on select ISP class C networks in:
Note: differences in absolute numbers of active hosts can be ascribed to the
fact that the two latter network blocks are for dial-up users, while the first
is cablemodem. In both cases, however, the curve is taken to represent relative activity on the network. The absolute numbers should be disregarded.
A wider and more detailed effort may carry relevant information about sociological, economic, technological, cultural and other aspects of the societies in question.
Additional insight into the nature of connectivity on the examined networks can
be obtained by assembling
graphical connectivity maps.
